If you haven't already discovered this, there have been and still are, many belief systems and religious doctrines in this world that refer to themselves as "Christian." For instance, there have been a few opportunities in which I had the opportunity to talk with some Jehovah's Witnesses. Usually, they (and the Mormons) are the folks who travel in suits and in pairs to our homes, seeking converts and pass on their literature. Well, if you say to a Jehovah's Witness and even a Mormon (I found out from experience) that you are a Christian, they often respond with "So am I!" It was when I learned that the J.Ws do not believe in the Trinity. And because God provided awesome Christian discipleship, through a godly sister in Christ, when I became a believer, I was blessed with being taught the basic fundamentals about what being a Christian means - doctrine and such.
